Choose a gather ratio the fabric can carry
Fullness is a design choice, not a universal 2:1 rule. Weight, drape, and seam bulk all matter.

Choose the edge you are attaching to, the fullness you want, and the panel count in your pattern or cut plan. The result adds the panel-edge allowances you specify.
Cut-edge plan
Check fabric direction, pattern instructions, and real material before cutting.
Before you cut
The result is a planning estimate, not a substitute for the pattern, the material in front of you, or the requirements of your quilter. Keep these boundaries with the printed plan.
The ratio applies to the gathered edge before seam allowances are added.
Every panel receives an allowance on both cut ends, including the two outer ends.
Bulky fabrics often need less fullness; sheer fabrics may need more.
Pattern matching and nap can increase the required yardage.
